FATTBURGER
Sizzlin'
Shanachie April 8, 2003
In an industry of short lived trends and one hit wonders, Fattburger
has
managed to persevere for close to two decades. The chart-topping
San Diego
based super-group has been one of instrumental music's most
popular
mainstays since the late 1980's. Fattburger's potent blend of
jazz, funk,
R&B and Latin music have them perennial radio favorites
and catapulted them
to the top of the Billboard charts. As one of smooth jazz's
elder
statesman, Fattburger strives to stay ahead of the curve. Smooth
Jazz News
heralds the band as "cutting edge creative forces that
grow more aggressive
and exciting over time." JazzTimes Magazine calls Fattburger
"A welcome
oasis in the desert of trendy and formula - saddled music."
Sizzlin', Fattburger's newest and sixth Shanachie CD, is a
power packed
recording that showcases the band doing what it does best: delivering
high-energy pressure cooked funky numbers and simmering laid
back melodies
with percolating rhythmic grooves. Sizzlin' melts right in your
mouth.
There are no microwavable numbers here, just pure organic grooves.
Each
track is tastier than the next. By the way, Fattburger was named
after a
popular hamburger chain!
Highlights on Sizzlin' include the uptempo funk driven title
track featuring
the rollicking keyboards of composer Carl Evans Jr. and the
light and breezy
ballad "Irene," showcasing the mellow guitar virtuoso
of composer Evan
Marks. "Blue Ridge Sunset," penned by Evans is a lovely
gospel inflected
song that shines light on the lyrical and soulful saxophone
of Hollis
Gentry III.
Another standout on the album is Mark Hunter's "You're
Finally Here," a real
head bopping 'get on the dance floor' kind of song that is sure
to make you
move.
The CD's bold and bluesy closing track "Mr. C," written
by drummer Kevin
Koch, is also a winner. Listen to the band really stretch out
and have some
fun. Koch says, "After listening to our new CD, I hope
people will come
away still tapping there feet, humming a melody and feeling
just a little
bit better about life in general. I like to believe that each
person has
there own unique experience when they listen to music and it's
gratifying to
know that when people listen to our music at least some of these
experiences
are positive ones. "
Since Fattburger's first performance at San Diego's Triton
club in the
mid-'80s, America's finest city has claimed Fattburger as a
matter of civic
pride. Many call Fattburger, "The Sound of San Diego."
Tommy Aros is the
only native of San Diego. Keyboardist Carl Evans Jr., grew up
in San Diego
but hails from Portsmouth, VA; drummer Kevin Koch is from Manitowoc,
Wisconsin; bassist Mark Hunter is from Detroit and guitarist
Evan Marks
hails from Cleveland.
Between the whole band, they have worked with a who's who list
of the music
business. Collectively they have worked with everyone from Barry
White and
Stevie Wonder to Cannonball Adderley, Clark Terry and Freddie
Hubbard.
Drummer Kevin Koch says, "I think the key to Fattburger's
longevity and
success is that we are five individuals with equal input on
every level.
Each player is free to interpret how his own instrument should
be utilized
in any given situation and we all have faith in each other that
the end
result will be something that we are all proud of. This kind
of creative
freedom has kept us all still interested in making music together."
Sizzlin' is a must have for any fan who has followed the many
flavors of
Fattburger and for all new fans who enjoy heartfelt feel good
music. In the
words of Jazziz Magazine, "Fattbuger is all about vibe
and good feelings."
How can you go wrong with that?
